Walk and Wheel Week

Walk and Wheel Week is next week!

Join us for Walk and Wheel to School Week at SJD on Oct 10-13, 2017.

Participate in a week of active school travel – pedal your bike, put your feet on the street, or catch a ride on BC Transit.

Here’s a quick summary of the daily event schedule. For full details, please see the information bulletin that will be sent home with students later this week.

  • Tues, Oct 10 – Drive to Five – parents can park their cars at designated locations that are a five-minute walk from school. Walking school buses will depart from these locations at set times. Click here for the Best Routes Map for drop off locations. Look for the 5’s in a blue circle.
  • Wed, Oct 11 – Feet on the Street – You’re encouraged to walk to school on Wednesday. For students living too far to walk, parents can use one of the “Drive to Five” locations.
  • Thurs, Oct 12 – Transit or Bike Day – Students are encouraged to take public transit or ride their bike to school. For transit information see the information bulletin, or plan your trip on the BC Transit website: https://bctransit.com/victoria/home. Parent volunteers will be leading cycling groups from James Bay, Fernwood and Oak Bay on Thursday and Friday.

James Bay: The James Bay group will be led by Emillie Parish depart at 8:10am on Thursday and Friday from the corner of Simcoe and Oswego on the large paved area within the James Bay school grounds. They will then ride down Simcoe and cross the street into Beacon Hill Park. Families living in the east part of James Bay can meet the group at the Watering Can spray park at approximately 8:20am.

Oak Bay: The Oak Bay group will be led by Natalie Longe and will depart at 8:10am on Thursday and Friday from Monterey Middle School (in the front, by the bike racks). Natalie will then lead the group along McNeil/Richardson, and stop at St Matthias Anglican Church (corner of Ricahrdson and Richmond) at 8:25 to pick up any additional kids and parents joining the train. They will then carry on along Ricahrdson until they can turn left (likely on Durban St) and head directly to SJD from there.

Fernwood: The Fernwood group will be led by Michael “Doc” Crawford on Thursday and Sonja bird on Friday. It will depart at 8:10am on Thursday and Friday from Fernwood Square. They will ride across the Vic High school grounds, down Camosun Street to Central Middle School, where riders from south Fernwood can meet up with them at 8:20am. The group will then continue down Moss Street to SJD.

  • Fri, Oct 13 – Choose Your Own Active Travel Adventure – For the final day of Walk and Wheel Week, students can choose to get to school by any one of the active travel methods from the previous three days. We are aiming for 100% participation! There will be a party in the EMPTY school parking lot to celebrate this fantastic accomplishment!!

If you want to really step it up, we encourage parents to sign up to be one of our celebration station or walking school bus volunteers during one or more of the mornings. Volunteers can sign up here for a 40-minute shift:t: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0b48afad23a64-wheel
